The Grog Shop is one of those great indie venues that the Slackers have played at for decades.

It started as a small little bar and then moved up to a mid sized room at its current location. All the while maintaining the same grit, edge, and love of indie music.

At the beginning of the pandemic, we received an encore of a grog shop show from a fan. Recently, I discovered a complete show.

Listening to this show, it brought back memories of a sweaty night. Face to face with some 300 odd fans in May of 2005. It was a year where we had started in Japan and would later go to Europe but in May we were in the midwest, in Cleveland, and that is a good place to be.

The sound isn't clean. It isn't perfect. You can tell when the band turns it up for an ending. When Glen shouts...you can tell. The amps fuzz out. The speakers fuzz out. Everything fuzzes out. But for me, its a pleasant fuzz like off the bootleg cassettes of the Specials I used to listen to as a kid (Live in Boston especially). Or the warm fuzz of an old garage record. Its that indie venue sound.

For that matter, if you've attended a show at the Grog Shop you will know that the sound isnt always pristine. Its an odd shaped room, with speakers place at interesting angles. So if you remember the music as being clean and clear, you probably weren't there.

I hope you enjoy listening to this artifact of a bygone past as much as I have.
