about

Peculiar was an album that emerged from a lot of phases.
At one point we had competing series of tracks.

The tracks that were on the International War Criminal EP that we were trying to best. Did we have better takes within us?

Tracks that we had been recording at different studios in the mid 2000s. An example of that is the alternative version of International War Criminal recorded at Eugene Cho's studio in Brooklyn. (Eugene played with Skavoovie.)

Tracks that were recorded at Ernesto's in an empty room. We had a day on tour where we loaded in early and set up to record. We ended up recording several versions of tunes. Some of which like What Went Wrong and 86 The Mayo ended up being the album versions. Set the Girl Free is a rough mix from one of these versions.

And finally, we had 2 days of recordings at Ernestos in front of a live audience.

In the end, most of the tracks on Peculiar are from the last group. They were picked from the live takes. When you listen to these rough mixes you will hear the energy. Most of these are versions that didn't end up Peculiar but I enjoyed the memory. There is something from touring music for 6 weeks. When you are in the zone you are murdering it.

The songs you heard on the album had a lot of vocal and horn overdubs. And some rhythm section edits. These are earlier versions. When they were raw.

I'll let you judge which one is better.
